Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Daniel Jacobs Odds & Pick

Boxing superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will attempt to further stamp his dominance on the Middleweight division when he challenges for a third title against Daniel Jacobs in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 4th.

Alvarez already holds the WBA and WBC belts and is seeking to further unify by taking Jacobs’ IBF championship at the sold-out T-Mobile Arena.

He is a wide favourite with BetOnline at -453, with Jacobs ranked at +378 ahead of the biggest fight of the year so far. The best value could be to go for a shocking win late on by the outsider, probably by decision.

Alvarez vs Jacobs is Boxing’s Biggest Fight of the Year

The Mexican is seeking to further embellish the superstar status he polished with his most recent major victory against Kazakhstan’s Gennady Golovkin in September last year.

Alvarez, 28, stepped up to  Super-Middleweight for his most recent date, a simple three-round stoppage of England’s Rocky Fielding at Madison Square Garden in New York in December.

He is a tough and stocky counter-puncher with quick hands and an ability to be unpredictable in the ring. He is  good defensively and is renowned as a fearsome body puncher.

Jacobs is known as a skilled and fearless boxer who is adaptable and fights well on the inside. He will have a height and reach advantage on Saturday. But there have been some question marks about his defensive ability.

The New Yorker, 32, is ranked as the world’s third best in the division by The Ring magazine.

Alvarez is a Three-Weight World Champion

The Ring rates Canelo as the world’s third best pound-for-pound boxer. He has been a multiple world champion in three weight classes if the WBA “Regular” Super-Middleweight world title he currently holds is counted,  although the “Super” title is held by England’s Callum Smith.

The Ring rates Canelo as the world’s third best pound-for-pound boxer.

He was WBA and WBC Super-Welterweight champion between 2011 and 2013 and held the WBC Middleweight title between 2015  and 2016, when he vacated.

Alvarez is one of boxing’s major global superstars. The broadcast streaming service DAZN are paying him a reported $490 million for a his current five year deal.

Alvarez’s Reputation Tarnished by Doping Scandal

Alvarez was handed a back-dated six month ban by the Nevada State Athletic Commisision in April 2018 after testing positive for the stimulant clenbuterol. He insisted  it had been contained in contaminated meat.

He regained the WBC title and added the WBA Middleweight title when he inflicted the first defeat of Kazakh icon “GGG” Golovkin’s impressive career by majority decision in  September last year.
